Millions for Thousands

The UK Government is ready to invest £9 million in the social and political spheres of Kyrgyzstan.

UNICEF and USAID Kyrgyzstan will handle the distribution of the grant aid.

On 13 March, heads of the foreign organizations signed memoranda of understanding, according to which projects aimed at improving the quality of life of Kyrgyz citizens will soon begin in the republic.

According to UNICEF Kyrgyzstan Representative Jonathan Veitch, £5 million will go toward the three-year “Social Equity” programme.

“Social Equity” will cover more than 50 rural municipalities in Osh, Jalal-Abad and Batken regions, selected based on several indicators, including high poverty levels, maternal and child mortality, geographical remoteness, vulnerability to social and inter-ethnic conflicts, and lack of access to education and healthcare services, — Veitch emphasized.

The remaining £4 million will fund USAID projects to promote parliamentary governance.
